The painting illustrates the arrival of two reactor units to the Conoco-Phillips Refinery located in Ferndale, Washington. The units were built in Japan and shipped across the ocean to the refinery in Ferndale, Washington.
An amazing feat of engineering was needed to move the large units. As the barge was always slightly shifting, tide rising and falling, and daylight turned to night.
I have illustrated the event as night approached and large light-alls were set up to illuminate the work area.
The Ferndale refineries are placed in a delicate shoreline area. A place of natural animal habitat, with wild birds, fish and other shore life inhabiting the locale. Therefore, I made sure to place birds in the painting as well as tall grass and driftwood, indicating the proximity to this type of shore.
