Two masted gaff-rigged schooner BLACKFISH
Built in 1938 by Jacob Story Length: 52 feet
Schooner Blackfish jamming the wind. The business of operating a large sailboat requires long hours of hard work but who would trade this job for anything?
A lovely lady of uncertain origin, fast and easy to handle, the schooner has won the hearts of seafarers plying rock bound coasts and braving he banks. Sails abaft the masts let these vessels lie close to the wind and tack quickly through narrow waters.
A fore-and-aft-rigged vessel. The characteristic schooner rig consists of two gaff sails, the after sail not smaller than the fore, and a headsail set on a bowsprit. Although British and Dutch prototypes existed in the 17th century, the schooner was developed in the United States, perhaps initially around 1713. (Schooner possibly is derived from the word scoon, a local term for skipping a stone.)
