Fine in appearance the vessel is impressive in a way that commands admiration and awe. The splendid design of a full-rigged ship setting sail with a fair wind filling the studding sails. The vessel is embarking on a journey of adventure, exploration and romance. A celebration of maritime experience is beautifully captured in this unique and stunning watercolor painting by artist James Williamson.
The sailor's life at sea, the time is the latter half of the nineteenth and early twentieth century, the last great age of sail. Maritime artwork created as a tribute to the intrepid sailor and ships born of the sea. Imagine sailing the oceans of the world on a vessel such as this and experiencing marvelous, colorful, unusual events and other matters of a kind to appeal to the imagination.
Ships and the sea have connected the world throughout history. Our enduring fascination with sailing ships and those who conceived, built and sailed these remarkable and wonderful vessels is a tribute to the memory of these brave, valiant and daring men and women of the sea. Creating maritime artwork of tall ships and the sea is evidence of our belief in the continuity of the past and our hopes, dreams and aspirations as we imagine the future of our new explorers, seeking adventure on exciting journeys.
A full-rigged ship or fully rigged ship is a sailing vessel with three or more masts, all of them square-rigged. A full-rigged ship is said to have a ship rig and is also known as ship-rigged.
Sometimes such a vessel will merely be called a ship in 18th to early 19th century and earlier usage, to distinguish it from other vessels such as schooners, barques, barquentines, brigs, et cetera. Alternatively, a full-rigged ship may be referred to by its function instead, as in collier or frigate, rather than being called a ship. In many languages the word frigate or frigate rig refers to a full-rigged ship.
Square rig is a generic type of sail and rigging arrangement in which the primary driving sails are carried on horizontal spars which are perpendicular, or square, to the keel of the vessel and to the masts. These spars are called yards and their tips, beyond the last stay, are called the yardarms. A ship mainly so rigged is called a square rigger.
The square rig is the aerodynamically most efficient running rig (i.e., sailing tailwind), and stayed popular on ocean-going sailing ships until the end of the Age of Sail. The last commercial sailing ships, windjammers, were usually square rigged four-masted barques.

Lazaro: Thank you for your positive comments. This was a hard painting to complete because of the complicated lines. However I did it - mind over matter. Jim
