Description
The Terminal Building 1888
Fairhaven, Washington
Home of Tonys Coffee and Tea
The Terminal Building The Terminal Building, so called because of Fairhavens aspirations to become the terminal city of the Great Northern Railroad, is the oldest surviving commercial structure in Fairhaven. The 50-foot square, two story, wood frame building was erected in the later months of 1888. The same year the Statue of Liberty was constructed in New York City Harbor. The following year the south and west sides of the building were covered with bricks. The bricks arrived from the Orient as ballast in the sailing ships, which called, regularly at the foot of Harris Street in Fairhaven.
The building has been occupied almost continually since construction was completed in 1888. The first floor is home to the world famous Tonys Coffee and Tea, the original northwest coffee house. The second floor is now used as office space. Over the years the building has hosted a variety of businesses, including saloons, restaurants, barber shops, billiard parlor, real estate offices, cigar store, drugstores, grocery store, general store and soda shop, ceramics studio, bicycle shop, toy shop, artist and design studios, legal office and now a coffee shop.
The Terminal Building has been restored to its 1889 appearance. Placed on the Washington State Register of Historic Places, the structure is a unique and valuable segment of historic Fairhaven.
Tonys Coffee & Tea Tony Campbell opened the Fairhaven Tea and Spice Shop in 1971. The original business was located on the first floor corner space. Michael and Jo Ring purchased the establishment in 1975. It again changed hands and in 1977 was acquired by Jo Ann and Bill MacKay. The owners of the building, as of May 2001, were Robert and Marcy Elliott.
Today the entire first floor of the building has become the most popular meeting place in town. The smell of fresh roasting coffee fills Fairhaven while inside shoppers, students, business people, artists, writers, musicians, police and firemen meet and mingle while listening to live music. As the centerpiece of Fairhavens restored historic district, Tonys Coffee & Teas offers a special retreat into the past. Realize as you look upon and enter this edifice that it is not a recreation of the past. You are experiencing a genuine, authentic piece of history. Many generations have utilized and have been a part of this structure. The Terminal Building creates the feeling of a romantic era. Listen carefully and you can hear the conversations of tall ship and steamship crews from all parts of the world. Over a century of living fills this wonderful domicile. The clang of trolley cars, the clop of horses along the brick roads of Fairhaven, the smells and noise of the salmon canneries and wood mills, the first motor cars, the sound of the first airplanes. Consider the changes that have occurred during the time the Terminal Building has existed.
