A flight of fancy or should I say a boat of fancy? A Pacific Northwest architectural icon, the New Whatcom City Hall built in 1892, placed on board a fishing vessel.
The title of the painting Whatcom Maritime reveals the thinking involved in this cartoon. Maritime defined as on, near, or living near the sea, of sea navigation, shipping, and characteristic of sailors and all things nautical. Anyone who lives in, or around Whatcom County or visitors to this magical land of the Pacific Northwest United States know the connection to the sea. Located on the Inland Sea, now called the Salish Sea, and gateway to the San Juan Islands, Whatcom County, and the cities of Bellingham, Blaine and Fairhaven have a great maritime history. Enjoy this unusual nautical creation.
