WHEN AND IF
When the next war is over, and if I live through it, Bea and I are going to sail her around the world. So said George S. Patton about the 63-foot Alden schooner he and his wife had commissioned in 1939. Built by FF Pendleton in Wiscasset, Maine, WHEN AND IF, as she was named, incorporated improvements for comfort and safety on the high seas.
General Patton's dream was not to be. He was killed in an automobile accident in Europe shortly after the war ended.
In 1939 General George Patton had a 63-foot custom schooner built for himself and his wife. He named her When and If because he vowed to cruise on her when and if the war ended and he survived. As fate would have it, he survived the war to perish in an automobile accident shortly after armistice.
In 1939 then Colonel General George S. Patton had a 63-foot John Alden designed schooner built for himself and his wife. Another world war was looming on the horizon and Patton said that he planned to sail the schooner, When the war is over, and if I survive. He named the schooner When and If.
When and If stayed in the Patton family until 1970 when it was donated to the Landmark School north of Boston, where for over 20 years, she was used in sail training programs for dyslexic children. (Patton himself was dyslexic.) The schooner was almost lost in 1990 when she broke free of her moorings during a November gale. After being hauled off the rocks she was rebuilt by the Gannon & Benjamin Boatyard of Marthas Vineyard. See our previous post. When and If has been sailing ever since.
Current history of the vessel: The hull is now painted black. The original hull was painted white as illustrated in the watercolor painting. Below is information listing the current dimensions and specifications.
WHEN AND IF is the quintessential Alden designed schooner, built by FF Pendleton in Wiscasset, Maine for Colonel and Mrs. George S. Patton. She was launched in 1939 and the Patton's planned to sail her around the world "when and if" Patton returned from the war that he saw looming in Europe. Patton, by then a General, was killed in a freak accident shortly after the end of the war and WHEN AND IF was sailed by Mrs. Patton for some years. Mrs. Patton gave the schooner to her brother Frederick Ayer, who sailed her along the New England Coast, eventually donating her to the Landmark School for use in their Watermark Program for dyslexic kids - Patton himself was dyslexic. In 1990 she was wrecked north of Boston. Subsequent owners had her rebuilt by Gannon & Benjamin Boatyard in Vineyard Haven, MA. Recently purchased by a family from New Jersey she has been refitted during the winter of 2005 -2006 and is in immaculate condition. She is a superbly seaworthy and comfortable vessel with long keel, gaff foresail and Marconi main. Measuring 63' 5" x 47' 3" x 15' 1" x 9', plus bowsprit and boomkin, she displaces 43 tons and carries about 1700 square feet of sail area. WHEN AND IF has wide decks, a large cockpit, high bulwarks, and a doghouse in addition to her commodious accommodations. WHEN AND IF is Coast Guard licensed and inspected to carry 17 guests and 3 crew on near shore routes during day light hours.
