Type of Vessel: Iron Hull Barque
Iron-hulled square-rigged barque GANGES anchored at a protected cove near the coast. The windjammer is viewed from a driftwood shore as mist moves across a distant headland. The story of sailing ships not only documents man's quest for greater speed at sea, it also reveals the course of world history and maritime power, of trade and exploration. The sailing ship has remained an object of grace and beauty in the twenty first century and a reminder of the romance and adventure of the great age of sail.
Most ocean-going windjammers were four-masted barques, since the four-masted barque is considered the most efficient rig available because of its ease of handling, small need of manpower, good running capabilities, and good capabilities of rising toward wind.
