Artwork of a fishing vessel resting in harbor representing the fisherman's life in the Pacific Northwest. The tang of the salt spray, the cry of the gulls, the sixth sense of knowing where to find the fish, working the seas bravely. Swapping yarns and feeling alive, Ah! That's the life lads. A rugged life, spray flying, nerves straining. We depend on these fishing boats and their crews to harvest the bounty of the sea.
A salt spray adventure, cast off the lines and set your compass.
There were fortunes made, most of them lost in the following season, there were big seasons, tremendous runs. One thing is for sure - the pure risk of the business. A fisherman builds a boat, and she will fill his life with adventure, glamour and heroics. The fishing boat, Argh! Think of her lads. A bone in her teeth, knifing through heavy swells on the North Pacific.
A saltwater man, gambling that this year will be the big one. The tang of the salt spray, the roar of the wind, the smell of salt water in the air, the cry of gulls, eyes wide on the tossing deck. One more season, one more chance to experience the fisherman's life in the Pacific Northwest.
Fishing Vessel Oregonian was built in 1912 in Tacoma, Washington for the Premier Salmon Company of Washington State. The original home port for this vessel was Juneau, Alaska. Built for fishing, work and tendering, the Oregonian was 56.2 feet long and had a depth of 5.7 feet. The estimated gross tonnage was 34. There was a crew of 7 people, an original engine of 55 hp and she has a wood hull.
An original painting of the Oregonian was commissioned in January 1997 by Jan Hrutfiord of Blaine, Washington. The vessel is illustrated at dock in front of the DAKOTA FISHERIES building, located at Drayton Harbor in Blaine, Washington.
Oregonian was purchased by Dakota Fisheries in April 1988 and is used as a fishing tender and dragger in the Straits of Juan de Fuca out of Neah Bay, Washington. She stays on the straits or the sound and inner waters and rarely ventures out onto the Pacific Ocean. Today, she is 58.9 feet long, and has a depth of 6.4 feet. Her gross tonnage is estimated at 42 and she is still working. Possibly the oldest fishing vessel working out of the Blaine, Washington harbor. A tough old girl, she continues to maintain her style and fishing boat charm. A testament to the skill of those who built her in 1912, 100 years ago, in Tacoma, Washington.
