Fishing vessel Sonia, owned by Josh Sieber, is harbored in the Blaine Marina. Josh fishes for salmon, crabs and dives for sea cucumbers from this 65-foot, wood hull, purse-seiner. Sonia fishes Puget Sound and the Boundary Bay area. Josh has owned the vessel for two years. The previous owners were Virge and Julie Viereck of Blaine. Sonia can be seen at Blaine Harbor and is a familiar sight to guests at Semiah-moo Resort as it passes by on the way to the fishing grounds.
Artist James Williamson ventured out to Boundary Bay from Blaine Harbor as a member of the crew of Sonia. The captain and previous owner of the vessel, Virgil Viereck, is now deceased and in memory of his love for this fishing boat the artist has painted a seagull as a symbol of Virgil's spirit. I have fond memories of the Sonia leaving Blaine Harbor in the early morning darkness and watching the sun rise on Boundary Bay off of Point Roberts. Spending a long day on the fishing grounds and coming into harbor late at night among the frantic activity of many boats off-loading fish at the Blaine fish processors. The salt air and smell of diesel, the engine noise and clatter of many radios, bright lights of the boats, crates of ice on the dock and hard work of crews and dock workers created a memorable scene.
The fisherman's life in the Pacific Northwest. The tang of salt spray, the cry of gulls, the sixth sense of knowing where to find the fish, working the seas bravely. Swapping yarns and feeling alive, Ah! Thats the life lads. A rugged life, spray flying, nerves straining. We depend on these fish boats and crews to harvest the bounty of the sea. A salt-spray adventure cast off the lines and set your compass.
