Washington State Olympic Shore
The Olympic Seashore is one of the last primeval reaches of the Pacific Coast. “The whole reason for coming to the shore…Stay an hour alone at night with the drift logs and moon, walk the beach at sunrise when the sea is burnished with the gold of the sky; and walk it in the fog when the offshore islands are dark hulks and the shoreline spruce black etchings…Do this and know the beauty and balance of life along the seashore.” -Ruth Kirk ‘Olympic Seashore’
To catch the essence of the wilderness coast, the spirit of the wind, water and land…stroll out among the rocks and sand of the tide flats and feel the calm tranquility of nature. Realize that you are not the conqueror of the shore. You are part of a whole. The Pacific Northwest is blessed with a coastline of scenic beauty and variety unmatched on earth. It’s a delightful place, where the Pacific surf washes and sometimes pounds the western edge of our continent. It’s a land of terrific storms and cloud formations, of wharves and lighthouses, of salt air and fading paint. It’s a perfect place for the human psyche to unwind, for workaday tensions to be washed away by the rhythmic cadence of the surf. The Pacific Coast boasts contrasts, drama and charm and the feeling is captured here, in this painting, to serve as a reminder to those who have experienced it and as an invitation to others of a pleasure still to come.
The Olympic Peninsula in Western Washington was one of the last frontiers of the contiguous United States to be explored and mapped. Today visitors can explore some of the most breathtaking scenery in the country. The Olympic Peninsula lies west of Seattle across Puget Sound and Hood Canal, is bordered on the west by the Pacific Ocean and on the north by the Strait of Juan de Fuca and sits at the northwestern most corner of the lower 48 states. Offering 13 salmon-bearing rivers, 10 breathtaking lakes and reservoirs, upwards of 15 state parks, and at least five designated wilderness areas, 73 miles of coastline, three rainforests, and miles of snow-capped mountain peaks the Peninsula may have already been mapped and explored, but there’s an abundance of wilderness yet to be discovered.
Olympic National Park protects over 73 miles of the some of the most primitive natural coastline in the 48 contiguous United States. The views of ocean, cliffs, headlands, islands and sea-stacks, coupled with the dramatic changing sea, provide a unique wilderness experience. Most of the coast can only be accessed by foot.
Rugged, remote, and wild, the Washington Coast exceeds expectations with every mile you head north along U.S. Route 101—from the mouth of the Columbia River to the tip of the Olympic Peninsula. Known for its lack of amenities, there are only a few small towns scattered along the way, leaving you alone with the elements, able to experience solitude, serenity, and the intensely gorgeous scenery along the shores of the Evergreen State. A lifetime could easily be spent uncovering every isolated nook and cranny along the gorgeous coastal paradise of Washington State. Spectacular beaches on the west coast full of sea stacks and driftwood, incredible views and beautiful sunsets are waiting to be discovered. The impressive Olympic Coast offers accessible coastal areas in the picturesque National Park.
An ideal place to find solitude, relax and forget the problems of the world. Watch spectacular sunsets, hear the sound of crashing surf on remote, wild and absolutely gorgeous timeless scenes of coastal grandeur. The Olympic shore is one of the most scenic places in Washington State.
Near the very northwest corner of the Olympic Peninsula spectacular scenes await you at the coast. Shi Shi Beach and Point of the Arches is a geological coastal wonder, offering unique sea stacks, incredible rock formations, and fantastic tide pools overflowing with life. Point of the Arches has some of the best sunsets in America and has been frequently featured in nature and photography magazines for its incredible beauty.
Experience Pacific Northwest beauty with the breathtaking majesty of this rugged and spectacular shore as sea stacks with trees rise from the sea. Few places in America are as remote and inspiring as the Olympic Shore. As you stand on the edge of the country, gazing out into the horizon, the spirit of the Pacific Northwest can be felt in full force.
