History of the Brigantine ROMANCE
The ROMANCE was built in 1936 as the Grethe and is another product of J. Ring Anderson. Originally, she had no engine and sailed between Denmark, Greenland and Iceland. Surviving the war, she was used in the 1965 film Hawaii, for which she was renamed the Thetis and was sailed by Alan Villiers. For many years the ROMANCE has been owned by captain Arthur M. Kimberly. He has written that, since acquiring the brigantine in 1966, he has sailed her more miles deep-sea than any other privately-owned and operated square rigger in service today-125,000 miles of blue water voyaging, including two circumnavigations. All these miles were made with amateur crews of young people. The ROMANCE has an overall length of 110 feet, a beam of 22 and a gross tonnage of 82 tons. Her sail area is 4500 square feet.
