USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN-72) Ship Motto that this nation, shall have a new birth of freedom and that government of the people by the people for the people Shall Not Perish from this earth.
The USS Abraham Lincoln arrives in Everett, Washington May 6, 2003, after nearly 10 months at sea, greeted by a welcoming crowd of thousands. About 3,000 sailors were onboard the nuclear-powered aircraft carrier, which tied up to its home pier at Naval Station Everett shortly after 10 a.m. Tulalip tribal members offered a homecoming welcome song as the vessel approached its berth. The 1,100-foot ship left Everett on July 20, 2002, and returned May 6, 2003, one of the longest deployments of a nuclear-powered carrier since Vietnam.
The huge, 100,000-ton, battleship was assisted to port by two navy tugs and two FOSS Maritime tugs. Bellingham artist James R. Williamson illustrated the 8,000 hp Lindsey FOSS and 4,000 hp Andrew FOSS in this original watercolor.
Representative Rick Larson introduced a House Resolution recognizing and commending the members of the Navy and Marine Corps who served on the USS Abraham Lincoln and welcoming them home from their recent mission abroad. The men and women serving on the USS Lincoln honorably responded to the call of duty, I am proud of the job they have done. They deserve recognition and they deserve our thanks. Larson said. In this week of homecomings, much will be said about the service of brave men and women aboard the USS Lincoln. All of the praise and thanks is well deserved. Praise and thanks should also go to the families of those aboard this great ship, they also showed amazing strength while their loved ones were away.
Homeward Bound Pennant From at least the early 19th century, it has been the custom of ships returning from a long overseas deployment to fly an extra-long commission pennant. The display of the homeward bound pennant is limited to ships that have been outside the United States continuously for 270 or more days. The pennant consists of white stars on a blue field at the hoist and is divided red over white at the fly. The length of the pennant is one foot for each member of the crew. Once the ship arrives home, the pennant is divided among the crew, with the captain getting the blue portion and the rest of the crew sharing the red and white portion equally.
