Artist's Description
I must go down to the seas again, to the lonely sea and sky, and all I ask is a tall ship and a star to steer her by, and the wheel's kick and the wind's song, I must go down to the seas again to the vagrant gypsy life.
Excerpt from poem by John Masefield.
The romance and adventure of the sailing vessels Aid of Abo.
Watercolor painting by artist James Williamson.
Artist James Williamson, ASMA
Signature Member of the American Society of Marine Artists
The Aid of Abo is seen wearing the old Russian ensign before the revolution and before Finland, in which Abo is an important port, had achieved its independence. She was a fairly typical vessel, of 291 tons N. R. T., built at Thoraswarf in 1873 and owned by Lindberg of Nagen in 1888. The vessel appears as she was rigged in 1888.
