Sylvia was a familiar vessel moored at Citizen’s Dock in Bellingham during the late 1970’s and early 1980’s. Since that time Citizen’s Dock has been removed and the present home port of Sylvia is uncertain. She was a memorable sight as she sailed Bellingham Bay and the waters of the San Juan Islands.
Gaff Ketch: On a Ketch, the mizzenmast is shorter than the mainmast and stepped forward of the rudder. Dropping the mainsail on a ketch will quickly reduce the sail area and will leave the boat reasonably balanced under the large mizzen and jib. This is a feature you’ll most appreciate in a sudden squall, or if an urge arises to go below to make tea in a more upright and dignified position.
“Set Sail Aboard a Classic Wooden Ship 5 Days, 4 Nights in the beautiful San Juans or Canadian Gulf Islands” -brochure from 1983

“Here in the Pacific Northwest, we are blessed with some of the finest cruising grounds in the world. From Puget Sound to Southeastern Alaska are more then 2500 miles of coastline. Much of this area is still uninhabited by man. Here, many of the animals displaced by man’s encroachment have found refuge. Sightings of bald eagles, sea otters, porpoises, whales, blue herons, tufted puffins, fur seals and many other varieties of wildlife become commonplace rather than a rarity. These unspoiled cruising grounds provide food aplenty for both man and beast. Salmon, scallops, prawns, abalone, oysters, and wild berries abound. To the east, the snow-capped peaks of the British Columbia coast range climb almost vertically from the clear, blue waters, creating fjords of unmatched beauty. Whether your interest is in fishing, whale watching, camping, kayaking, hiking, photography, scuba diving, mountain climbing or just sailing along, soaking up the sunshine, the Baltic Trader SYLVIA can help arrange the right cruising package for you. The Baltic Traders Bellingham, Washington $199.95 per person.” -Bellingham 1983
