Olympic Coast Low Tide, Washington State Olympic Peninsula.
The Olympic Seashore is one of the last primeval reaches of the Pacific Coast. “The whole reason for coming to the shore…Stay an hour alone at night with the drift logs and moon. Walk the beach at sunrise when the sea is burnished with the gold of the sky; and walk it in the fog when the offshore islands are dark hulks and the shoreline spruce black etchings…Do this and know the beauty and balance of life along the seashore.”
Ruth Kirk Olympic Seashore
To catch the essence of the wilderness coast, the spirit of the wind, water and land…stroll out among the rocks and sand of the tide flats and feel the calm tranquility of nature. Realize that you are not the conqueror of the shore. You are part of a whole.
The Pacific Northwest is blessed with a coastline of scenic beauty and variety unmatched on earth. It’s a delightful place, where the Pacific surf washes and sometimes pounds the western edge of our continent. It’s a land of terrific storms and sunburns, of wharves and lighthouses, of salt air and fading paint. It’s a perfect place for the human psyche to unwind, for workaday tensions to be washed away by the rhythmic cadence of the surf.
Mighty headlands stand guard above the sea. Sandy beaches line much of the shore; some extend many miles to distant horizons, while others are nestled in secluded coves between protective promontories. Lush rain forests border the beaches along much of the northern coast, while farther south one finds the continent’s most massive coastal sand dunes amid rugged, grass-covered bluffs. The geographic diversity of this magnificent seashore provides endless enjoyment, peace and tranquility.
You’ll want to walk along the beaches – to collect driftwood or shells and agates, or to examine the exciting intertidal marine life, or simply to absorb and reflect on the fascinating and relaxing atmosphere of the shore. You will discover your own special treasures in this enchanting land beside the sea.
Wave and wind-swept driftwood adorn Pacific Northwest beaches. These beaches are superb for beachcombing, their tide pools remain full of life, and not only birds and sea lions visit the shore – bears and wildcats have been known to wander here. The Pacific Northwest retains some of the last wilderness beaches in the United States.
The Pacific Coast boasts contrasts, drama and charm and the feeling is captured here, in this painting, to serve as a reminder to those who have experienced it and as an invitation to others of a pleasure still to come.
